Resources for New Students

Recommended Listening As we are learning about this music and beginning to practice our instruments, it is very important that we have an idea in our mind of the way we would like to sound, and this can only come from regular listening to great musicians of our instrument. This list provides a starting point for all bluegrass students, as well as lists for each specific instrument.

Bluegrass Jam Standards Jamming regularly with others is one of the best ways to improve in every facet of playing. However, it does require a little prep work. There are a finite number of extremely well-known standards that bluegrass musicians all over the world play, and some of them are listed here. In general, this music should be committed to memory (both chords and melody) so that we can play anytime, anywhere. If you are uncertain about how to get started, our jam classes or beginner slow jam are great places to start!
