The Meaning of a Tree The Field Hymnal (2017)

Recorded in May 2016, "The Meaning of a Tree" is the debut album from the progressive bluegrass quartet, The Field Hymnal. The album contains 13 original tracks written by mandolinist Nate Roberts, including original lyrics and musical setting of poems by Robert Burns, William Cullen Bryant and Edna St. Vincent Millay. Rooted firmly in bluegrass but with a love for new sounds as well, The Field Hymnal draws inspiration from nature and poetry, and from jokes told poorly by dear friends. If music can be a meeting place, The Field Hymnal is a door that is always open.

Structures: Duo Improvisations for Acoustic Guitar & Tabla Nate Roberts & Doug Scheuerell (2013)

'Structures' is an enrapturing collection of improvisations for acoustic guitar and tabla. Each piece is built upon a classical Indian beat cycle, or "taal," which ranges from 6-16 beats in length. Melodically and harmonically, many of these pieces are somewhat "free" in nature; no specific musical compositions were brought into the recording sessions. To maintain the integrity of this approach, each performance was captured entirely live, and appears here unedited.

Unlike a lot of freely improvised music, the promotion of dissonance is not the point intended here. Instead, this record captures a vibrant dialogue between the melodic and harmonic vocabulary of the American folk tradition and the rhythmic vocabulary of North Indian classical music.
