MAFM Summer Fest FAQs

What kinds of activities will the day include?

Excellent question! The day will include instrument jamming in the folk music/bluegrass style, canon singing, all kinds of dancing from contra to ceilidh to flatfoot, singing games from around the world, performances from two student bands, a short evening concert and more! The day will have a structured timeline, but will also be loose enough for any impromptu activities/jams that might pop up.

Can I come even if I don’t play an instrument?

Of course! There will be singing and dancing which everyone can join in along with concerts to watch throughout the day. Any of the instrument jams will welcome singing or are fun just to sit and watch and enjoy the music, too!

Should I bring my own food?

Yes. We will break for lunch and dinner and everyone will be able to eat their own food in company with others.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes! Please do! This festival is great for families. There will be some planned activities aimed specifically at the younger ages (Mother Goose, singing and movement), as well as many activities that are suitable for all ages. There is also a playground at Prospect Park and there will be chalk and games like jump rope available for the littles, too!

Do I have to pay to come to the day festival?

Nope! The day is free for all! Bring your friends and everyone will have a good time!

Do I have to sign up ahead of time?

Absolutely not. Just drop by any time. Come for the whole day or just part! Whatever suits you and/or your family best!

Who can come? Do I have to be a student at Michigan Academy of Folk Music?

No, you do not need to be a MAFM student and EVERYONE is welcome. Are you a parent? A child? Graduated? Retired? All are welcome and everyone will have fun! Come join us for a spectacular day of music making!
